ROADS MINISTER ORDERS IMMDIATE CLOSURE OF ATWIMA MPONUA BRIDGE DUE TO SAFTY HAZARDS

Roads Minister Orders Immediate Closure of Atwima Mponua Bridge Due to Safety Hazards

On March 3, 2025, Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza announced the urgent closure of a deteriorating bridge in the Atwima Mponua District, Ashanti Region, due to serious safety concerns.

The bridge, which crosses the Offin River and connects communities like Kotokuom with nearby farming areas, has significantly declined in condition. Visible issues include fragile metal beams, deep surface cracks, and crumbling pillars, posing a serious risk to motorists—especially farmers transporting goods to urban markets.

Residents have been calling for repairs for some time; however, action was only taken after images and videos of the bridge's poor state gained attention on social media.

In response to the situation, President John Dramani Mahama directed the Roads and Highways Minister to assess the site personally and take immediate action. Following an evaluation with engineers from the Ministry, it was confirmed that contractors have been assigned to begin repair work without delay.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has advised motorists to seek alternative routes until the bridge is completely restored.
