Public Colleges of Education to Serve One Hot Meal Daily to Trainees – PRINCOF

The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has announced that teacher trainees in public Colleges of Education will now receive just one hot meal per day, starting June 16, 2025. This change comes as a result of ongoing financial challenges.

In a letter sent to the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), PRINCOF explained that although the government provides a GH¢400 monthly allowance for each trainee, a portion of it—GH¢196 (about GH¢8.00 daily)—is allocated for meals, based on a prior agreement with TTAG.

Despite multiple appeals to increase the feeding allocation, no additional support has been secured. Consequently, PRINCOF has determined that continuing the three-meal-per-day plan is no longer financially practical.

After thorough discussions with all 47 public Colleges of Education, PRINCOF decided to reduce the meals to one per day due to rising food prices and operational costs. They emphasized that while student nutrition remains a priority, feeding programs must reflect the current financial realities.

PRINCOF acknowledged the difficult nature of this decision but said it was necessary to ensure the continued delivery of other vital services and to maintain the colleges’ financial stability. They assured trainees that they are working with TTAG, the Ministry of Education, and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to explore more sustainable ways of supporting students.

“We are grateful for your patience and cooperation as we make this transition to keep the colleges running effectively,” the statement concluded.
