REBELS HAVE TAKEN CONTROL IN SOME AREAS OF DR CONGO
Rebel forces have taken control of Bukavu, a key city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The rebel coalition, Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), claimed to have seized the Kavumu airport and forced government troops to retreat.
Residents reported seeing M23 fighters in the streets, with some saying the rebels promised to restore order. The DRC government hasn't confirmed the takeover, but a military spokesperson acknowledged that government forces retreated after the rebels occupied the airport.
This development comes after the rebels claimed the takeover of Goma, the largest city in the eastern DRC, less than three weeks ago. The fighting in Goma left over 3,000 people dead.
The M23 rebel group, comprised mainly of ethnic Tutsis, is accused of being backed by Rwanda, but Rwandan President Paul Kagame denies involvement. The rebels' quest for territory raises concerns about the impact on the region's mineral-rich resources.
The AFC rebel alliance has occupied strategic points in Bukavu, including the provincial governor's office and residence. The rapid advance into Bukavu marks the group's largest territorial acquisition, with the cities of Goma and Bukavu having a joint population of over three million people.
The international community has called for a ceasefire, but the rebels continue to push for more territory. The situation remains volatile, with residents fearing for their safety and livelihoods.
