10-Year-Old Boy Dies After Collapsing Due to School Punishment

A tragic incident occurred at Red Hill Baraka School when Shawn Victor Were, a 10-year-old student, died after collapsing during punishment. His mother received a call from the school around 2:48 PM, stating that Shawn was unwell and incoherent. When she inquired why he wasn't taken to the hospital, the director claimed there was no available vehicle.

Concerned, his parents and a neighbor rushed to the school and found Shawn lying on a mattress surrounded by teachers without any clear explanation for his condition. They transported him to Life-Care Hospital in Kikuyu, where doctors struggled to resuscitate him due to faulty oxygen equipment. He was declared dead after attempts to revive him failed.

During resuscitation, Shawn vomited undigested rice and watermelon. Initially, a teacher denied feeding him; however, another later admitted to giving him watermelon in an attempt to help. It turned out that earlier that day, Shawn had been unfairly punished while monitoring noisy classmates during swimming lessons—a class he did not attend due to his parents opting out because of his sick sister.

Despite presenting evidence of innocence, Mr. Austin, the teacher, punished Shawn and several others with running cross-country. During this exercise, Shawn collapsed and began convulsing. His twin sister learned from peers that he had been left behind while seizing.

Afterward, two teachers carried him back but failed to administer appropriate care as they fed him food while he was convulsing—leading to choking and airway obstruction. The school's response following his death was disturbingly indifferent; instead of condolences or accountability for their negligence, one staff member coldly commented on arrangements for taking his body to the morgue.

The family demands answers about the lack of supervision and medical assistance provided when Shawn needed it most. This tragedy highlights broader concerns regarding safety protocols in schools and calls for better training for personnel to manage medical emergencies effectively. The family is seeking justice for their lost son and urging educational authorities to ensure more stringent safety measures are implemented in schools.

Rest in peace, Shawn Victor Were.
