Chairman Wontumi Laments Alleged Government Freeze of His Bank Accounts, Draws Stark Comparisons to Global Sanctions

Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has voiced deep concern and frustration over what he claims is the government’s decision to freeze his bank accounts. According to him, the move has left him financially stranded, raising serious questions about his ability to meet basic needs such as food and daily survival.

In a public outcry that has caught the attention of both political observers and the media, Chairman Wontumi expressed bewilderment over how such drastic actions could be taken against him, especially considering his influential role within the ruling party. He lamented that the freeze on his accounts has not only disrupted his personal life but also affected his business operations and general livelihood.

Highlighting the severity of his situation, Wontumi went as far as to compare the government’s action to international sanctions, specifically those imposed by the European Union on Russia. He argued that even Russia, which has been subjected to extensive global sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine, has not experienced such extreme financial isolation. According to him, the treatment he is receiving is harsher than what a superpower like Russia has endured on the international stage. He implied that, at least in Russia’s case, some access to financial systems remains intact—whereas in his situation, the complete freezing of his accounts has left him entirely incapacitated.

Wontumi’s statements also allude to deeper political tensions. He specifically mentioned former President John Dramani Mahama in his remarks, suggesting that the situation may not just be a legal or administrative decision but potentially politically motivated. Although Mahama is currently in opposition as the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the reference hints at ongoing hostilities and rivalries that continue to influence political discourse in Ghana. Wontumi’s frustration appears to stem not only from the financial hardship he claims to be enduring but also from a feeling of betrayal and injustice from the very government his party leads.

The allegations have stirred debate across political and civil circles, with many questioning whether such a drastic financial sanction against a regional political leader is justified or legal. Concerns are being raised about the due process behind such a move, including whether a court order was obtained, or whether Wontumi was given any formal notice or opportunity to respond.

The situation underscores the complex intersection between politics, law, and personal freedoms in Ghana. If Chairman Wontumi’s claims are accurate, it raises troubling questions about the extent to which political rivalries are influencing administrative decisions, and whether financial tools are being weaponized to silence or suppress political figures.

For now, the public awaits a response from the government or relevant state institutions to clarify the legality and reasoning behind the alleged account freeze. Meanwhile, Wontumi’s comments continue to fuel a broader conversation about fairness, political intimidation, and the responsibilities of democratic leadership in safeguarding the rights of all citizens—regardless of their political affiliations.
