Sam Okudzeto, a notable lawyer and former member of the Council of State, has publicly defended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, amid growing calls for his dismissal. Okudzeto strongly believes that there are no valid reasons for removing the IGP from his position. The context for these concerns stems from recent unrest within the Ghana Police Service. Several officers have come forward to allege that they were unfairly denied promotions while under Dr. Dampare's leadership. Compounding this situation, a Kumasi High Court ruled against forty officers who had claimed they were unjustly overlooked for promotional opportunities earlier this year.Additionally, some police personnel have accused Dr. Dampare of limiting communication between district and regional police leaders and the media regarding ongoing cases, which has led to further dissatisfaction among ranks. In an interview with 3FM’s Beatrice Adu on AGENDA for TV3, Okudzeto addressed these issues head-on. He refuted claims that Dr. Dampare creates fear among police officers, asserting instead that he is known for his rational decision-making and dedication to justice.Okudzeto also criticized the pattern of demanding change every time a new government assumes power, arguing that such demands only disrupt continuity within institutions: “It makes no sense,” he stated. As discontent grows among certain government officials regarding Dr. Dampare's leadership, the future of his role remains uncertain. Ultimately, it will be up to President Nana Akufo-Addo to make any final decisions about the IGP’s position in light of these tensions and public sentiments.
